Semenic-Cheile Carașului National Park

Semenic-Cheile Carașului National Park is a protected area in Caraș-Severin County in southwestern Romania that conserves mountain landscapes and limestone gorges. The park protects both forested mountain massifs and the dramatic Carașului Gorge.

Key attractions are the highland Semenic massif with forest and meadow habitats and the Cheile Carașului gorge - a narrow limestone canyon with steep cliffs and karst formations. Trails and lookout points provide access to river valleys, waterfalls, and alpine meadows.

The park was designated to protect the region’s natural habitats and geological features and to conserve native flora and fauna; management has focused on maintaining trails and limiting damaging land uses in sensitive zones. Over time parts of the area have seen increasing recreational use balanced with conservation measures.

Located in the southwestern Carpathians, the park lies in Caraș-Severin County near the border with Timiș and Hunedoara counties. The nearest larger towns are Reșița and Caransebeș, and the landscape is a mix of forested mountains, river valleys, and karst topography.

• Best visiting times: Trails and viewpoints are concentrated around the gorge and the Semenic ridge; early summer and autumn offer the clearest weather for panoramic views and wildflower displays.
