How to Get to Selbhorn #

Access is on foot from valley villages in the Salzburg region. Typical approaches begin from alpine parking areas reached by local roads off the B164 or B311; the trail network connects from villages like Maria Alm and nearby huts. Public transport into the broader Berchtesgaden/Saalfelden area is possible by regional buses and trains, but the last kilometers usually require a walk.

Tips for Visiting Selbhorn #

  • Start early in summer (before 8am) to catch the light on the karst plateau and avoid late-afternoon storms.
  • Bring a detailed alpine map and a compass; the Steinernes Meer is a limestone plateau where trail markers can be scarce and weather changes fast.
  • Overnight at a nearby alpine hut (book in advance) to split the ascent into manageable stages and enjoy mountain bread and tea when the day-trippers are gone.
