Plateau Europe's largest high-altitude alpine meadow plateau

Seiser Alm (Alpe di Siusi) is a high-altitude Alpine meadow and plateau in South Tyrol, northern Italy, celebrated as the largest Alpine meadow of its type in Europe and a major outdoor recreation area. It sits within the Dolomites, a UNESCO World Heritage site.
The plateau covers an area of approximately 56 square kilometres and ranges in elevation roughly from 1,680 to 2,350 metres, offering extensive hiking trails in summer and groomed slopes and cross-country routes in winter. Visitors use the area for walking, mountain biking, skiing and panoramic views of the Dolomite peaks.
The modern visitor infrastructure includes mountain huts, marked trails and lift links from nearby valleys; the settlement Compatsch on the plateau is the principal hub for services and access. Agricultural grazing, particularly for cattle and sheep, remains a visible part of the landscape.
Seiser Alm is located in the Dolomites of northern Italy within the province of South Tyrol, with road and lift access from valley towns such as Kastelruth and Ortisei.

What to See #
- Compatsch: Compatsch (Compaccio) is the main settlement on the plateau at about 1,850 metres and serves as the primary base for lifts, trails and visitor facilities on the Alpe di Siusi.
How to Get to Seiser Alm #
From Bolzano/Bozen (about 25-30 km), take regional buses toward Castelrotto/Kastelruth and then the cable car or chairlift from Ortisei (St. Ulrich) or the road to Compatsch/Compatsch car park. Local bus routes connect the valley to Seiser Alm in summer; driving via SS242 and SP64 is common.
Tips for Visiting Seiser Alm #
- If hiking, use the Compatsch/Compatsch cable car station for the gentlest ascent to central meadow areas.
- Rent a mountain bike at one of the valley villages for tracks that avoid the busiest chairlifts.
- Try the local 'Kaiserschmarren' at a rifugio - filling and oddly satisfying after alpine air.
Best Time to Visit Seiser Alm #
Best in summer for hiking and alpine wildflowers, and in winter for family-friendly skiing; late spring and autumn are quieter.
