Segre (river)

The Segre is a river of northeastern Spain that rises in the Pyrenees and becomes a major tributary of the Ebro. It is an important watercourse for Catalonia and flows through several significant towns.

Its course offers diverse landscapes - mountain valleys in the upper reaches, urban riverfronts where it passes cities such as Lleida, and agricultural plains downstream. The river is used for recreation in parts, including riverside walking, canoeing and angling where conditions allow.

Human management over centuries has included irrigation channels and reservoirs to support agriculture and local water supply. These interventions have altered flows in some stretches and supported regional farming systems.

Geographically the Segre runs roughly west to southeast from the Pyrenees through Catalonia before joining the Ebro basin, passing urban centers such as Lleida along its route.
