Segovia Cathedral

The cathedral of Segovia, formally the Catedral de Santa María, is a late Gothic cathedral in central Segovia, Castile and León, Spain. Construction began in 1525 and the building is noted as one of the last Gothic cathedrals erected in Spain.

The current cathedral was built in the 16th century after damage to the earlier medieval church; construction began in 1525 under architects of the Hontañón family and continued through the century. Over time the building has undergone restoration and repair but retains its overall late Gothic plan and many interior features from the 16th century.

The cathedral sits on the eastern side of Segovia’s central Plaza Mayor within the historic core of Segovia, roughly northwest of Madrid by road. It is set among the city’s medieval streets and close to other major monuments such as the Alcázar.

• Best viewpoints: Clear views of the cathedral are available from the adjoining Plaza Mayor and from the nearby Alcázar across the Eresma River.
• Construction dates: Construction of the present cathedral took place in the 16th century, beginning in 1525 and completed in the later 1500s, making it one of Spain's late Gothic cathedrals.

• Major internal elements: The cathedral complex includes the main nave and Capilla Mayor, the choir area with carved stalls dating to the 16th century, and a prominent bell tower built during the same construction period in the 16th century.
• Approaches and viewpoints: The exterior plazas and steps around the building provide formal approaches and views toward the tower and the façade from different angles in the city center.
