Scupi
Archaeological Site Ancient Roman-era settlement that became modern Skopje
Scupi is the Roman- and late-antique settlement near modern Skopje; archaeological remains and museum displays draw visitors interested in the region’s ancient urban history.
Scupi is the name used for the ancient settlement located on the site of and around modern Skopje, North Macedonia, known from Roman and later Byzantine occupation. It is represented today by archaeological remains and finds that attest to a settled urban centre in antiquity.
Remains at the site include traces of Roman-period urban fabric such as streets, building foundations and funerary material, with artifacts excavated and conserved in regional museums. The site illustrates continuous occupation and reorganization under Roman and Byzantine rule.
Scupi developed as part of the Roman provincial system and continued to be occupied into the early medieval period, after which the urban focus shifted to the later medieval and modern foundations of Skopje.
The archaeological area lies within and on the outskirts of the modern Skopje metropolitan area in the Skopje region, north-central Macedonia.
