Scuola Grande di San Rocco

The Scuola Grande di San Rocco in Venice is a historic confraternity headquarters famed for its near-complete decorative cycle by Jacopo Tintoretto. The building’s interiors are covered with large-scale canvases and ceiling paintings executed by Tintoretto and his workshop across the 1560s to 1590s.

Key highlights are the richly painted upper hall (Sala Superiore) and the Sala dell’Albergo where many of the most important canvases are displayed, forming a coherent theological and pictorial program. The ensemble is one of the most concentrated single-artist presentations in Venice and is central to studies of Tintoretto’s late career.

The Scuola was established as a lay confraternity and the present building dates to the late 15th and 16th centuries, adapted and decorated by successive generations of patrons and artists. Its role shifted from confraternity meeting place to public cultural site as preservation and museum practices developed.

Situated in the San Polo district of Venice near Campo San Rocco, the Scuola is within the city’s central network of canals and pedestrian routes and is easily reached on foot from main tourist areas.
