Schwanenwerder

Schwanenwerder is a small private island in the River Havel in south-west Berlin, known for its upscale residential character and historic villas. The island has long been associated with affluent housing rather than public recreation.

There are tree-lined streets and detached villas from the late 19th and early 20th centuries, many set in landscaped gardens; the island itself is not generally open to the public. Visitors usually view the island from the lakeside promenades around Wannsee or from boats on the Havel.

During the 1920s it became a favored address for wealthy Berlin residents; in the 1930s some properties were subject to Nazi seizure and forced sales. After the Second World War the island remained an exclusive residential district and private ownership continued into the postwar period.

Schwanenwerder lies in the Havel near the Wannsee area in south-west Berlin, within the city’s network of lakes and waterways and reachable visually from the surrounding shoreline.
