Schönbuch

Schönbuch is a large, densely wooded area and protected nature region in Baden-Württemberg, Germany, located between Stuttgart and Tübingen. It is designated as a nature park and functions as an important green belt and recreational forest for the region.

The area offers extensive waymarked hiking and cycling routes that pass through mixed beech and oak woodland, small valleys and open clearings. Key access points are served by local towns and a regional branch railway that crosses the area, making multiple short and long loop walks possible. People also visit to see traditional rural sites on the forest edge and to use picnic areas and viewpoints.

The woodland has been continuously forested for centuries and long served local communities as hunting and timber country. Over the 20th century the area acquired formal protection and infrastructure for public recreation and conservation, leading to its current status as a managed nature park.

Schönbuch sits in central Baden-Württemberg roughly between the cities of Stuttgart and Tübingen, with town access from places such as Böblingen, Tübingen and Dettenhausen. The forest occupies rolling terrain of the supra-regional landscape and is approached from regional roads and rail links.

• Bebenhausen Abbey: Historic Cistercian monastery on the northern edge of the forest, founded in the 13th century and notable for its well-preserved abbey buildings and parkland immediately adjoining the woods.
• Schönbuchbahn: Local branch rail service linking towns at the forest edge, running through scenic sections and used by walkers and cyclists to access trailheads.
