Schneeberg (Alps)
Mountains Eastern Alps mountain with historic rack railway
Lower Austria’s Schneeberg is the region’s highest peak, served by the historic Schneeberg Railway. Hikers and skiers use its trails, alpine meadows and viewpoints that can reach toward Vienna on clear days.
Schneeberg is a prominent mountain in the Northern Limestone Alps and the highest peak in Lower Austria, reaching approximately 2,076 metres above sea level. The mountain is a regional landmark with a broad summit plateau, ridges and multiple established trails used by hikers and mountaineers.
Popular features include the historic Schneebergbahn rack railway that carries visitors from the valley up to higher trailheads, and a network of marked routes leading to the summit and alpine huts. The area is used for summer hiking, alpine flowers and winter ski-touring where conditions allow.
Geologically the mountain is limestone, with typical alpine karst features and past glacial shaping. Over time the mountain has been developed for tourism with mountain huts and the railway making the high terrain more accessible.
Schneeberg sits in eastern Austria within Lower Austria province, forming the eastern boundary of the Alps in that region and visible from surrounding lowlands; access points are at valley towns served by the rack railway and connecting roads.
