Schloss Neugebäude
Castle Historic imperial-era palace with extensive formal gardens
Early modern hunting palace southeast of central Vienna, Schloss Neugebäude survives as historic architecture and parkland used for walks, cultural events and seasonal visits.
Schloss Neugebäude is a late Renaissance palace complex located in the Simmering area on the eastern edge of Vienna. It was built in the late 16th century for Emperor Maximilian II and originally formed a large pleasure and hunting residence.
Today the main palace survives largely as ruins set within a park. Visitors encounter masonry fragments, garden layouts and the parkland that once formed the palace grounds; the site is used as public green space and for occasional cultural uses.
The palace was commissioned and constructed under Emperor Maximilian II in the years 1569 to 1572 and represented an imperial suburban seat rather than a fortified castle. Over the centuries the building fell into disuse and decay and the remaining structures were never fully restored.
Schloss Neugebäude lies in the Simmering district on the southeast side of Vienna, set within a park near the urban edge. The site is accessible from the city and forms a historic green space close to Vienna’s built-up area.
