Schloss Leopoldskron

Schloss Leopoldskron is an 18th-century rococo palace on the Leopoldskroner Weiher just outside Salzburg, Austria, built in 1736 for Prince-Archbishop Leopold Anton von Firmian. It is widely known for its preserved palace façade and lakeside setting.

The palace and its small lake are the landmark’s principal attractions; the pond and palace exterior are famously recognizable from The Sound of Music, and the site offers framed views of the façade reflected in the water. Interiors include embellished rococo reception rooms and formal halls used for events and limited public visits.

The building dates to 1736 and was later owned by private individuals who used it for cultural and residential purposes, including the theatre director Max Reinhardt in the 20th century; in recent decades it has been operated as a hotel and event venue while retaining historic interiors.

The palace lies about 2.5 to 3 kilometres southwest of Salzburg’s historic centre, set in parkland around the small pond; the site is reached by short roads and footpaths from Salzburg suburbs.

• Best viewpoint: Exterior lakeside views of the palace and its reflection are the best-known photo spot and are accessible from public paths around the pond.
• Access note: Parts of the palace complex function as a private hotel and event venue, so public access to interiors is limited and often tied to guided tours or bookings.

What to See #

• Leopoldskroner Weiher (lake): The shallow pond immediately in front of the palace is the Leopoldskroner Weiher, whose lakeshore and palace façade were used for exterior shots of the von Trapp house in the 1965 film The Sound of Music.
• Palace interior and reception rooms: The palace interior contains ornate 18th-century rococo rooms and formal reception spaces that are used for hotel guests and private events; some areas are opened for guided visits or events.
