Schafberg (Salzkammergut)
Mountain Austrian mountain with historic rack railway and panoramas
A mountain above Wolfgangsee reached by the historic Schafberg cog railway; tourists ride the railway or hike for panoramic views across the Salzkammergut lakes.
Schafberg is a prominent mountain in the Austrian Salzkammergut, rising to about 1,783 metres at its highest point. It is well known for wide panoramic views across the surrounding lake district.
A key attraction is the historic Schafbergbahn, a narrow-gauge rack railway that runs from the lakeside town of St. Wolfgang to a station near the summit; the ascent provides steep, scenic views. Hikers use marked routes from several valleys and passes to reach the summit and the ridge.
The ridge and summit area are natural high-alpine terrain with a summit station that serves visitors arriving by train or on foot. Facilities at the top include a mountain building with visitor services during the main season.
Schafberg sits in the state of Salzburg within the Salzkammergut lake region, immediately above St. Wolfgang and surrounded by a cluster of mountain lakes and valleys that define the area’s tourism network.
- Elevation and access: The mountain summit is at about 1,783 metres above sea level and is reached by the historic Schafbergbahn rack railway from St. Wolfgang, as well as by marked hiking trails.
