Sazan is an island at the entrance to the Bay of Vlorë in southwestern Albania, administratively part of Vlorë County. The island has strategic importance due to its position at the bay mouth and a history of military use.
Coastlines and abandoned military structures are the principal sights; visitors note fortifications, bunkers and derelict buildings along the shore. The island’s shoreline and small bays are used for short coastal walks and photography rather than formal visitor facilities.
Control and use of Sazan have changed several times in the 20th century, when it served as a naval and military base under different authorities and retained restricted status for much of the Cold War period. Many military installations remain as visible ruins.
Sazan sits at the mouth of the Bay of Vlorë off Albania’s southwestern coast, close to the Karaburun peninsula and visible from the mainland around Vlorë. Access is by private or tour boat from coastal towns in the region.

How to Get to Sazan #
Sazan (Sazan Island) lies off the Bay of Vlorë and is reached only by boat. The usual access point is Vlorë harbor (Vlora); private boat transfers and tourist excursions/charter boats depart from Vlorë or nearby coastal villages (Plazhi/Vlorë waterfront). Note that Sazan has been a military area and public access can be restricted - check permissions and local operators in Vlorë before travel.
Tips for Visiting Sazan #
- Access to Sazan is controlled and often restricted-book a licensed boat excursion from Vlorë/Orikum that handles entry permissions rather than attempting independent landings.
- Visit in late spring or early autumn when seas are calmer and excursion boats operate more reliably; arriving on the first departure of the day reduces the chance of cancellations and gives you more time ashore.
- Stick with your guide while exploring the island's military ruins and bunkers-many structures are unstable or off-limits, and guides know which areas are safe and allowed to visit.

Best visited in the shoulder seasons (spring and autumn) for pleasant weather and fewer crowds, with summer for full beach season.
