Savaiʻi
Island Samoa's largest island known for volcanic landscapes and culture
Samoa’s largest island, Savai’i, has lava flows, rainforests and coastal villages where chiefly systems remain active. Travelers seek traditional fale stays, waterfalls, reef snorkeling and quiet roads for self-drive trips.
Savaiʻi is the largest island in the Independent State of Samoa, located to the northwest of the main island Upolu. It is known for a relatively undeveloped landscape of villages, rainforest interiors and coastal features.
Key attractions include traditional village life, the Saleaula lava fields where 20th-century eruptions altered the coastline, and the Alofaaga Blowholes where seawater is forced through lava tubes producing powerful jets. The island offers a quieter, more rural alternative to Samoa’s more visited areas.
Savaiʻi has retained much customary governance and village structure, with local matai (chiefs) and community management playing prominent roles in daily life. Tourism infrastructure is modest, focused on village stays, guided excursions and natural attractions.
The island is reached by regular vehicle ferry from Upolu at Salelologa, with crossings typically around one hour, and has small local air services as well.
- Scale and character: Savai'i is the largest island in Samoa and is less developed touristically than neighboring Upolu, offering traditional villages, rainforest and geological sites.
- Ferry access: Regular vehicle ferries connect Savai'i with Upolu from Salelologa to Mulifanua; the crossing typically takes about one hour.
What to See #
- Salelologa (ferry terminal): Salelologa township on the east coast is the main ferry terminal and commercial hub for island arrivals from Upolu.
- Saleaula lava fields and Alofaaga Blowholes: The Saleaula lava fields and the Alofaaga Blowholes are notable geological attractions on the north and east coasts, showing relatively recent volcanic activity and coastal steam jets.
How to Get to Savaiʻi #
Savai’i is Samoa’s largest island and is reached primarily by inter-island ferry from Upolu: regular vehicle-and-passenger ferries run between Mulifanua (Upolu) and Salelologa wharf on Savai’i. There are also limited domestic flights to Savai’i’s Maota/Salelologa airstrip from Faleolo (Upolu) on some scheduled services; the main ferry terminal at Salelologa is adjacent to the town centre so arrivals are a short walk or taxi ride from local services.
Tips for Visiting Savaiʻi #
- Plan your arrival via the inter-island ferry to Salelologa (Savai'i's main ferry terminal) and check Mulifanua-Salelologa sailings from Upolu in advance-connections can be limited.
- Time a visit to the Alofaaga blowholes for high tide when the water jets are strongest, and hire a local guide for interior excursions (lava fields, waterfalls) to reach less-visited spots safely.
- Use the ring road to base yourself in a single village for 2-3 nights rather than trying to circle the island in one day; that way you can visit quieter beaches and inland sites when day-tripper traffic is low.
Best Time to Visit Savaiʻi #
Visit during the dry season (May-Oct) for drier weather and calmer seas; the wet/cyclone season runs roughly Nov-Apr.
