Sark

Sark is a small Channel Island in the Bailiwick of Guernsey, in the English Channel, known for its low-density settlement and largely car-free environment. The island comprises several linked peninsulas and is notable for steep sea cliffs and rural landscapes.

Key local features include a narrow rocky ridge that connects Great Sark to Little Sark and a network of footpaths and narrow lanes used for walking and cycling. The island retains a feudal historic administration until late 20th-century reforms and has a compact inhabited area with farmland and coastal cliffs.

Historically governed under a seigneurial system, Sark developed as a small rural community with maritime links to nearby Guernsey. Modern governance and services have evolved while the island retains much of its traditional character.

Geographically Sark lies in the Channel Islands west of the Cotentin Peninsula and north of Brittany; it is a short ferry crossing from Guernsey and occupies only a few square kilometres of land dominated by coastal terrain.

• Transport: Motor vehicles are generally not used; transport on the island is by foot, bicycle, tractor or horse-drawn carriage, contributing to a low-traffic environment.
• Access: Access is by regular ferry connections from Guernsey; the island's small size makes most locations reachable on foot within a short time.

What to See #

• La Coupée: A narrow granite ridge known locally as La Coupée that links Great Sark to Little Sark and provides a prominent walking route with sea cliffs on either side.
• Little Sark: Little Sark forms the eastern tip of the island cluster and is reached on foot from the main island; it features coastal cliffs and small sheltered coves.
