Sarcophagi of Carajía

The Sarcophagi of Carajía are a set of anthropomorphic funerary monuments attached to a cliff face in the Amazonas region of northern Peru, attributed to the pre-Inca Chachapoya culture. The figures are large, human-shaped sarcophagi made of clay and other materials and are positioned in niches high on a sandstone cliff.

Visitors see the carved or modeled anthropomorphic forms arranged on the rock face and can view them from a prepared trail and viewpoint that preserves the archaeological context. The sarcophagi are notable for their size and for the degree of preservation of exterior modeling that evokes human features and funerary dress.

These funerary monuments date to the late pre-Columbian period and reflect regional mortuary practices of the Chachapoya people; they were discovered and documented by scholars in the 20th century and are now recognized as important archaeological heritage. Conservation and site management focus on preventing direct contact and on stabilizing the cliff and the sarcophagi.

The site stands on a sandstone cliff above a valley in the Amazonas department of northern Peru and is reached by rural roads and a short footpath from the nearest local settlement; the setting is steep and forested.
