How to Get to São Carlos

São Carlos is usually reached by road from São Paulo or Campinas after flying into one of the region's airports (Guarulhos GRU, Viracopos VCP, or Congonhas CGH) or by intercity bus to Rodoviária de São Carlos. There's no regular long‑distance passenger train service, so most visitors use buses, rental cars, or rideshares from the nearest airports or bus terminals.

By Air

São Paulo-Guarulhos International Airport (GRU): From GRU you normally continue to São Carlos by bus or car. Take the airport bus or taxi into São Paulo (to Terminal Rodoviário Tietê) - airport bus/taxi to Tietê ~R$30-60 and 40-60 minutes - then an intercity bus Tietê → Rodoviária de São Carlos takes about 3-4 hours and costs roughly R$50-80. Driving or a private transfer from GRU to São Carlos is around 3-3.5 hours and typically costs R$250-500 for a one-way private transfer, depending on the provider.

Viracopos/Campinas (VCP): Viracopos is closer to São Carlos than GRU. From VCP you can take a taxi or rideshare to Campinas bus terminal (R$40-70, ~30-40 minutes) and then an intercity bus Campinas → São Carlos (about 1.5-2 hours, R$30-50). Driving from Viracopos to São Carlos takes roughly 1.5-2 hours by car.

São Paulo-Congonhas (CGH): Congonhas serves domestic flights into São Paulo city. To reach São Carlos from Congonhas take a taxi or bus into central São Paulo (to Terminal Tietê) - about 30-60 minutes and R$20-60 - then an intercity bus Tietê → São Carlos (3-4 hours, R$50-80). A direct private transfer from Congonhas to São Carlos is around 3-3.5 hours and will cost several hundred reais.

By Train & Bus

Train: There is no regular long-distance passenger rail service to São Carlos. Brazil’s long-distance passenger rail network is limited in this region, so trains are not a practical option for getting to the city.

Bus: Intercity buses are the most common public way to reach São Carlos. Buses arrive at Rodoviária de São Carlos from Terminal Rodoviário Tietê (São Paulo) - journey time ~3-4 hours, fares about R$50-80 - and from Campinas (Terminal Rodoviário de Campinas) - ~1.5-2 hours, R$30-50. Regional bus companies run multiple daily departures; buy tickets at terminals or online in advance for peak times.

How to Get Around São Carlos

São Carlos is best navigated by a mix of intercity buses or rented car for arriving and local rideshares, municipal buses or cycling for getting around town. For visitors, rideshares and walking are the most convenient for short trips, while a rental car makes day trips to nearby towns and countryside easiest.
