Santo Toribio de Liébana

The Monastery of Santo Toribio de Liébana is a historic monastery in the Liébana valley of Cantabria in northern Spain, noted for housing the Lignum Crucis relic. It is one of the region’s principal pilgrimage destinations.

The complex centers on a chapel that displays the Lignum Crucis and a monastery church with Romanesque and later additions; pilgrims and visitors come to venerate the relic and to see the monastic interiors. The site includes museum and exhibition spaces that display liturgical objects and manuscripts.

The monastery has origins in the early Middle Ages, with major construction and rebuilding in the medieval period and further alterations in later centuries, resulting in the mix of Romanesque and post-medieval fabric seen today. It has functioned continuously as a religious centre and pilgrimage stop for centuries.

Santo Toribio sits in the Liébana valley near the town of Potes in Cantabria, in the mountainous interior of northern Spain. The complex occupies a rural hilltop location within a few kilometres of Potes and is accessed via local roads from the valley.
