Santa María del Naranco
Monument Pre-Romanesque palace on Oviedo's royal hillside
A ninth-century Asturian pre-Romanesque palace near Oviedo, built as a royal hall; travellers study its barrel vaults and carved capitals, and combine visits with Oviedo’s medieval streets and nearby Romanesque churches.
Santa María del Naranco is an 9th-century Asturian pre-Romanesque building on Mount Naranco near Oviedo, originally built in 842 by order of King Ramiro I as part of a royal complex. It is celebrated as a well-preserved example of early medieval Iberian architecture and ornament.
The structure was constructed as a palace or hall and later converted to a church; its decorative stonework, blind arches and raised ambulatory illustrate distinctive features of the Asturian pre-Romanesque style. Visitors commonly view the building together with the nearby San Miguel de Lillo, which belongs to the same royal complex.
Historically it formed part of the Asturian kingdom’s court architecture in the 9th century and has been conserved as a key monument in Spain’s early medieval heritage. It is protected and interpreted for visitors as part of Oviedo’s historic ensemble.
Santa María del Naranco stands on Monte Naranco about 3-4 kilometres north of Oviedo’s city centre, set above the city with viewpoints that overlook Oviedo and the surrounding green hills.

How to Get to Santa María del Naranco #
Santa María del Naranco sits on the slopes of Monte Naranco just northwest of Oviedo. By car it is only a few kilometres from Oviedo city centre (roughly a 10-minute drive) via the local roads up the hill; Oviedo’s local buses also run routes that serve Monte Naranco with short walks from the bus stops to the monument.
Tips for Visiting Santa María del Naranco #
- Go early in the morning to avoid coach parties and to have a clear view of the pre‑Romanesque structure and its carved decorations with softer light on the west front.
- Combine a visit with nearby San Miguel de Lillo and the Mount Naranco viewpoints-the site is very quick to see on its own, and the nearby monuments together give a fuller sense of Asturian pre‑Romanesque architecture.
- Use the small pull‑in parking area on the mountain road and then walk the short path to the church rather than trying to time bus arrivals; many visitors miss the broader panorama from a short walk uphill behind the monument.
