Santa Maria dei Miracoli

Santa Maria dei Miracoli is a Baroque church on the southern side of Piazza del Popolo in Rome, forming one half of the well-known pair of churches that frame the square. The church dates to the late 17th century and is part of the formal urban composition at the entrance to the historic centre.

The building is compact, faced with classical elements, and is most often seen in photographs and urban studies as one of the two symmetrical churches that terminate the piazza. Visitors approach the church from the piazza and from adjoining streets and use it as part of a circuit of central Rome sights.

The present church was completed in the Baroque period as part of urban works to embellish Piazza del Popolo; its near-twin, Santa Maria in Montesanto, completes the paired composition. Over time the two churches and the piazza have remained a fixed element of Rome’s city plan and a frequent stop on walking routes.

The church stands at the southern end of Piazza del Popolo, adjacent to the intersection of several major thoroughfares in central Rome and a short walk from the Pincio terrace and Via del Corso.
