Santa Maria de Ripoll
Religious Site Romanesque monastery with notable medieval frescoes
Ripoll’s Benedictine abbey features a celebrated Romanesque portal and cloister; visitors study medieval sculpture and Catalonia’s monastic architecture.
The Monastery of Santa Maria de Ripoll is a medieval Benedictine abbey in the town of Ripoll in Catalonia, noted for its Romanesque architecture and sculpted portal. Its origins date to the early medieval period and it became an important religious and cultural centre in medieval Catalonia.
The most notable feature is the carved Romanesque west portal and its tympanum, with large figural sculpture and narrative reliefs from the 11th-12th centuries. The cloister contains a continuous series of Romanesque capitals carved with biblical scenes and animals that attract study by historians and photographers.
The abbey complex also includes the church interior and adjoining former monastic buildings that house a museum and displays of medieval sculpture and liturgical objects. These spaces together illustrate the monastery’s role as a regional artistic and ecclesiastical centre in the Middle Ages.
A medieval monastery was established on this site in the early medieval period; tradition links its foundation to the late 9th century under Catalan counts. The community grew into a major Benedictine house with a scriptorium and artistic workshop through the 11th-13th centuries, when the Romanesque church and cloister were executed.
The site underwent periods of decline and later restorations; significant conservation and reconstruction work in the 19th and 20th centuries replaced lost fabric and consolidated the Romanesque sculptures and cloister elements. The complex now functions as a historic monument and museum.
The monastery stands in the town centre of Ripoll in the Ripollès comarca of Catalonia, in the foothills of the Pyrenees. It forms the focal point of Ripoll’s historic centre and is surrounded by the town’s streets and civic buildings.
