Santa Maria Antiqua
Religious Site Early medieval Roman forum church with important frescoes
In the Roman Forum area, Santa Maria Antiqua preserves early medieval frescoes within a layered archaeological setting; art historians and history-minded visitors arrive for its rare wall paintings and Forum location.
Santa Maria Antiqua is an early medieval church located on the southeastern slope of the Palatine Hill in the Roman Forum, notable for an extensive sequence of wall paintings produced during the late antique and early medieval periods. The church preserves layered frescoes that document artistic developments from the 6th to the 9th centuries.
The interior fresco cycle includes portraits and devotional imagery of popes, emperors and saints and is a key resource for studying Byzantine and early medieval art in Rome. The site is primarily visited for its painted decoration rather than architectural grandeur.
The church was founded in the late antique period, saw its principal phase of decoration in the early Middle Ages, and was later buried by deposits and changes on the Palatine; archaeological excavation and conservation in the 20th century exposed the frescoes now on view.
It stands on the Palatine Hill overlooking the Roman Forum and is visited as part of the combined Forum/Palatine archaeological area.
- Fresco sequence: The surviving fresco cycle spans roughly the 6th through the 9th centuries and is a primary reason for scholarly and visitor interest.
