Santa Margarida Volcano
Volcano Extinct volcanic crater in Catalonia with grassy caldera
An extinct volcanic cone in Catalonia’s Garrotxa Natural Park with a grassy crater and remnants of a chapel; hikers and geology enthusiasts use marked trails through the volcanic landscape.
Santa Margarida is a dormant volcanic cone in the Garrotxa volcanic zone of Catalonia, notable for its well-preserved circular crater that contains a small hermitage. The site is part of the larger volcanic landscape protected as the Garrotxa Volcanic Zone Natural Park.
Visitors typically walk to the crater rim and descend into the grassy crater to see the Ermita de Santa Margarida, a chapel set in the crater floor, and to follow short trails around the cone that link to other nearby volcanic cones. The setting is compact and popular for short hikes, photography, and geological interpretation.
The volcano formed during the Quaternary volcanic activity that created the Garrotxa field; it has been extinct for many thousands of years and its crater is now vegetated. Over time local communities preserved the hermitage and paths, and the area was later included in the regional natural park to protect the volcanic features and associated ecosystems.
Santa Margarida sits near the town of Olot in the comarca of Garrotxa, Catalonia, in a rural volcanic landscape of cones, lava flows and wooded valleys. The site is accessible by local roads and marked park trails and is frequently visited on day trips from Olot.
- Hermitage in crater: The hermitage is built inside the crater and is the site's most recognizable feature for photography and short walks.
- Park management: The volcano lies within the Garrotxa Volcanic Zone Natural Park, which manages trails and visitor information for the volcanic landscape.
What to See #
- Ermita de Santa Margarida (hermitage): A small Romanesque hermitage stands within the crater, visible from the rim and a distinctive focal point in photographs of the site.
- Crater and rim viewpoints: The grass-filled volcanic crater forms a circular depression with internal walking paths and viewpoints around the rim that offer close-up views of the crater interior and surrounding volcanic cones of the Garrotxa zone.
