Santa Cueva de Covadonga

The Santa Cueva de Covadonga is a Catholic cave shrine in the Covadonga sanctuary within the Picos de Europa in Asturias, northern Spain, traditionally associated with the Virgin of Covadonga and early Reconquista traditions.

The site comprises a small rock grotto with a chapel and altar set into the cave face, and a surrounding sanctuary complex that includes a larger church and visitor circulation. Visitors come to see the carved cave chapel and the statue of the Virgin, follow the short approaches and stairways into the grotto, and use nearby viewpoints to look over the surrounding mountains and lakes. The precinct is compact but forms a major regional pilgrimage destination with defined paths and interpretive signage.

The cave shrine became a focal point for local devotion in the medieval period and has been venerated in connection with the early Christian resistance to Moorish expansion in northern Iberia; the sanctuary complex around the cave grew over subsequent centuries. A larger basilica and pilgrimage facilities were added nearby in the 19th century to accommodate increasing numbers of visitors.

The shrine sits on the western slopes of the Picos de Europa, close to the village of Covadonga and the road connecting to Cangas de Onís in Asturias. The site is reached by local roads and short on-site paths; it lies within a mountainous, forested landscape and is often combined with visits to nearby lakes and mountain routes.
