Sanctuary of Our Lady of Sameiro Church

The Sanctuary of Our Lady of Sameiro is a hilltop Marian shrine on Monte Sameiro overlooking the city of Braga in northern Portugal. It is one of the country’s principal Marian pilgrimage sites.

The complex centres on a basilica with devotional altars and an open esplanade used for religious gatherings and processions. The site is a focus for Marian devotion and attracts pilgrims and visitors year round, with peak activity on major feast days.

Construction of the sanctuary began in the 19th century and the site developed over subsequent decades into the present pilgrimage complex. Architectural and devotional elements reflect that period of origin and later additions.

Monte Sameiro lies a short drive north of Braga in the Braga District, occupying a prominent hill that affords wide views over Braga and the surrounding Minho countryside.

The Sanctuary of Our Lady of Sameiro sits on Monte Sameiro just north of Braga. It is reachable by car from Braga city centre in about 10-15 minutes along the local uphill roads signed to Sameiro; parking is available near the sanctuary. Local buses and tourist minibuses from Braga also serve the sanctuary area (check the Braga municipal bus timetables), and from the nearest bus stop it’s a short, steep walk up to the church.

• Visit late afternoon or at sunset for expansive views from the hilltop terrace over Braga and the surrounding hills, when the light brings out the sanctuary's sculpture and domes.
• Combine Sameiro with a stop at Bom Jesus do Monte in a single trip from Braga - many visitors only do one; doing both gives contrasting pilgrimage sites and different panoramic viewpoints.
• Expect pilgrimage groups and coach tours at midday and on religious feast days; to avoid those crowds and buses, aim for early morning or late afternoon on weekdays.
