Sanctuary of Our Lady of Lourdes
Religious Site Major Catholic pilgrimage site with healing spring
Centered on the Grotto of Massabielle, the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Lourdes attracts pilgrimage for processions, baths and Eucharistic services; visitors attend masses, descend to the cave and join evening candlelight processions.
The Sanctuary of Our Lady of Lourdes is a major Roman Catholic pilgrimage complex in Lourdes, southwestern France centered on the Grotto of Massabielle, where Bernadette Soubirous reported Marian apparitions in 1858. The sanctuary comprises several basilicas, chapels and devotional facilities built around the grotto and the spring.
Primary visitor highlights include the grotto itself, the spring used for pilgrim bathing and drinking, the upper and lower basilicas and the large underground Basilica of St. Pius X. Large-scale devotional activities include daily Masses, processions and the well-known nightly torchlight Marian procession during the main pilgrimage season.
The apparitions in 1858 led quickly to the development of the site as an international pilgrimage destination; infrastructure and church buildings were constructed from the late 19th century onward to accommodate growing numbers of pilgrims. The site is also the focus of medical and ecclesiastical inquiries into reported healings associated with the spring.
The sanctuary sits beside the Gave de Pau river within the town of Lourdes in the Hautes-Pyrénées, immediately adjacent to the town center and within easy walking distance of the Lourdes train station.
- 1858 apparitions and spring: the Marian apparitions to Bernadette Soubirous took place in 1858, and the spring at the grotto is central to the sanctuary's devotional practices.
- Torchlight processions: torchlight Marian processions are held daily in the high season and are among the most visible devotional activities for visitors.
