San José is a stratovolcano in the Principal Cordillera of the Andes on the Argentina-Chile border. It reaches a high alpine summit used by mountaineers as a classic high-Andean objective.

The volcano presents typical andesitic stratovolcano morphology with a summit crater and steep flanks. Climbs commonly require glacier travel and altitude acclimatization due to its elevation.

San José formed as part of Andean volcanic activity related to subduction of the Nazca Plate beneath South America; eruptions have occurred in the Holocene but the volcano is not among the most frequently active in the region.

Geographically the mountain lies in the high Andes west of Mendoza province in Argentina and east of the Santiago region in Chile; it sits along the international frontier and is approached from high mountain valleys on either side.

  • Border peak: Sits on the Argentina-Chile border in the Principal Cordillera and is a destination for experienced mountaineers; access routes approach from both countries.
