San Ignacio Miní
Archaeological Site Jesuit mission ruins amid Misiones jungle landscape
San Ignacio Miní preserves Jesuit mission ruins in Misiones with red sandstone churches, plazas and interpretive paths that explain the 17th-18th‑century missionary settlements.
San Ignacio Miní is the ruins of a Jesuit reduction in Misiones Province, Argentina, dating to the colonial period of the 17th and 18th centuries. The remains form one of the best-preserved examples of Jesuit missionary architecture in the region.
Visitors can walk among the stone remains of the mission church, cloister and ancillary buildings and see carved stonework and layout that illustrate the scale of the settlement. A small on-site museum presents finds and interpretation, and clear surfaced paths provide close-up views of the façade and domestic areas.
The mission was built by Jesuit missionaries during the colonial era and functioned as a communal settlement for the local Guarani population until the Jesuit order was expelled from Spanish territories in 1767, after which the site declined and fell into ruin. Conservation and archaeological work in the 20th century exposed and stabilized the principal structures.
The ruins lie in eastern Misiones Province near the town of San Ignacio, in the forested lowlands of northeastern Argentina close to the border with Paraguay and accessible from regional roads and the provincial capital.
- Conservation status: The site is part of the Jesuit Missions of the Guaranis group and is preserved as an archaeological park with walkways and explanatory panels.
What to See #
- Main church: Ruined stone church façade and nave with surviving walls and carved details that form the site's most visible monument.
- Cloister and domestic quarters: Rectangular cloister and adjoining rooms where domestic and religious activities occurred; much of the layout is visible in the standing masonry.
