San Giorgio Maggiore (church), Venice
Church Renaissance church on Venice island designed by Palladio
On its own island in Venice, San Giorgio Maggiore is a Palladian church whose façade and campanile frame lagoon views. Visitors climb the bell tower, attend concerts and photograph the monastic architecture.
San Giorgio Maggiore is a church on the island of San Giorgio Maggiore facing the Venetian lagoon and Piazza San Marco; the building was designed by Andrea Palladio and constructed in the late 16th to early 17th century. Its classical façade and clear proportions make it a widely recognised example of Renaissance architecture in Venice.
The island complex includes the church interior with notable paintings by Venetian artists, the refectory and a bell tower that, when open, provides broad views across the lagoon toward St. Mark’s Basin and the historic city. The site was historically attached to a Benedictine monastery and retains monastic buildings alongside the church.
Palladio’s design emphasizes a temple-like façade and a balanced interior plan; the building campaign spanned the latter half of the 16th century with finishing phases in the early 1600s. The island remains an active place of worship and a frequent stop on guided visits of central Venice.
Situated on the island of San Giorgio Maggiore immediately across the water from Piazza San Marco, it is reached by short public-boat services and is one of the principal island landmarks of central Venice.
