San Giorgio Maggiore

San Giorgio Maggiore is an island in the Venetian lagoon and the site of the white‑marble church of the same name, designed by Andrea Palladio in the 16th century. The church and its monastery form a prominent architectural ensemble facing the San Marco Basin.

The Palladian façade and the church interior, together with monastic buildings and a campanile, are the island’s main attractions; the campanile offers panoramic views across Venice and the lagoon when open to visitors. The site also contains paintings and works associated with Venetian masters.

Construction and decoration of the church occurred in the late 16th and early 17th centuries under Palladio’s design, and the ensemble has been preserved as an important example of Renaissance architecture in Venice. The monastery buildings historically supported Benedictine life on the island and now form part of the cultural fabric of the site.

San Giorgio Maggiore sits on a small island directly across the water from Piazza San Marco, on the southern edge of the main Venetian canal approach, and is reached by vaporetto and private boats.
