Sammezzano

Sammezzano is a 19th-century Moorish-revival palazzo and estate in the village of Leccio, near Reggello in Tuscany. It is best known for its highly ornate, polychrome interior rooms and exotic historicist decoration commissioned in the 19th century.

The interior contains a sequence of elaborately decorated halls and chambers featuring tilework, carved wood, painted surfaces and complex geometric ornamentation in a Mudejar-influenced style. The ensemble is notable among 19th-century Italian historicist architecture for its scale and level of decoration.

Major refurbishment and decorative work were carried out in the mid- to late 19th century under the patronage of the estate owner, who commissioned the Orientalist redesign that defines the site’s character today. Since the late 20th century the estate has faced conservation challenges and limited public access.

Sammezzano lies in the municipality of Reggello in the province of Florence, within inland Tuscany; the estate sits in parkland in the village of Leccio, southeast of the city of Florence.
