Salzburg Cathedral
Church Baroque cathedral in Salzburg, site of Mozart baptisms
Salzburg Cathedral anchors the city’s baroque Altstadt with twin towers, a grand nave and Mozartian associations; tourists visit for architecture, music history and services in the historic center.
Salzburg Cathedral (Dom zu Salzburg) is the Baroque Roman Catholic cathedral at the heart of Salzburg, Austria, serving as the seat of the archbishop. The present cathedral was consecrated in 1628 following reconstruction.
The exterior is marked by twin towers and a central dome; the interior contains a large nave, side chapels and ornate Baroque decoration. The cathedral is closely associated with the city’s musical history and is the site of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s baptism.
A cathedral has stood on this site for many centuries; the present Baroque building replaced earlier medieval structures after a major rebuilding in the early 17th century. It has since been central to Salzburg’s religious and civic life.
The cathedral sits in Salzburg’s historic centre on Domplatz, adjacent to the Residenz and other principal public squares.
- Consecration date and status: Consecrated in 1628 after a Baroque rebuilding, the cathedral forms a focal point of Salzburg's historic centre and is part of the city's UNESCO-listed ensemble.
