Saipan, Northern Mariana Islands

Saipan is the largest island and administrative centre of the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands in the western Pacific Ocean. It serves as the political and economic hub of the territory and contains the main population and tourism facilities.

Beaches, World War II historical sites, and resort accommodation are key visitor draws, with the northwest town of Garapan the primary centre for hotels and services. Outdoor activities include snorkeling, diving, and sightseeing to memorials and viewpoints.

Saipan was the site of a major World War II battle in 1944 and subsequently became part of U.S.-administered trusts and later the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands. Postwar development established the island as the territory’s administrative and tourist centre.

Geographically Saipan lies in the western Pacific, north of Guam and southwest of the Japanese islands. The island is hilly in the interior with coastal plains and coral reef-fringed beaches.
