Sainte-Baume

Sainte-Baume is a karst ridge and pilgrimage massif in Provence, southeastern France, known for its wooded slopes and a small cave shrine associated in Christian tradition with Mary Magdalene. The site has been a pilgrimage destination since the medieval period and retains active religious and walking routes.

Hikers and pilgrims follow established trails through Mediterranean woodland to reach the grotto and the adjacent priory complex; the ascent is the core visitor experience rather than a single monumental building. The area also contains a network of paths, viewpoints and small historical religious structures that reflect centuries of devotion and local mountain settlement.

Sainte-Baume lies inland in Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur, between coastal plains and the higher Provence hills, and is accessed from nearby towns in the Var and Bouches-du-Rhône departments.
