Saint-Pierre de Montmartre
Religious Site One of Paris's oldest churches near Sacré-Cœur
Saint‑Pierre de Montmartre, adjacent to Sacré‑Cœur, preserves medieval fabric and a Romanesque nave; pilgrims and history-minded visitors explore its cloister remnants and quieter vantage points above Paris.
Saint-Pierre de Montmartre is a parish church on the summit of Montmartre in Paris, with surviving fabric that dates to the 12th century. It is one of the oldest churches on the hill and retains Romanesque and Gothic elements.
The church includes a simple stone nave, chapels and a historic cloister area, and is often visited alongside the nearby Sacré-Cœur and Place du Tertre. Its compact interior and medieval masonry contrast with the larger 19th-century basilica beside it.
Originally the abbey church for the former Montmartre Abbey, it served monastic and parish functions over many centuries and was repaired after damage sustained in the Revolutionary period and later. Conservation and restoration work in the 19th and 20th centuries exposed early foundations and medieval phases.
Saint-Pierre stands on Montmartre hill in Paris’s 18th arrondissement, immediately adjacent to the Sacré-Cœur Basilica and overlooking the city from the northern side of central Paris.
- Age: Parts of the surviving fabric date back to the 12th century, making it one of the oldest churches on Montmartre.
- Position on Montmartre: It sits directly beside the Sacré-Cœur basilica and the Place du Tertre, so visits are often combined with those attractions.
