Saint Peter’s Abbey (Stift Sankt Peter) is a Benedictine monastery in Salzburg founded around 696 by Saint Rupert and continuously associated with the city’s religious life. The abbey precinct lies at the foot of the Festungsberg immediately adjacent to Salzburg Cathedral and the Hohensalzburg Fortress.
Major points of interest within the complex include the abbey church, a historic cemetery with catacombs, and a monastic library that preserves manuscripts and printed collections accumulated over centuries. Much of the visible monastic architecture was remodelled in Baroque style during the 17th and 18th centuries.
