Saint Hilarion Castle
Castle Medieval hilltop fortress offering panoramic Mediterranean views
Perched on Kyrenia’s mountain ridge, Saint Hilarion Castle offers layered medieval ruins, narrow stairways and coastal views; visitors climb its steep paths to inspect towers, cisterns and battlement fragments.
Saint Hilarion Castle is a medieval fortress on the northern slopes of the Kyrenia (Girne) mountain range in northern Cyprus. The site comprises terraced defensive enclosures and ruinous buildings set high above the coastal plain.
The castle dates back to Byzantine origins and was substantially expanded and modified during the Lusignan and medieval periods to serve as a defensive stronghold and occasional royal retreat. Its layout includes multiple wards and stairways carved into the rock of the hillside.
Built initially in the early medieval era, the site was adapted by successive rulers including Byzantine and Lusignan authorities through the Middle Ages; it functioned as part of the island’s mountain defences and saw phases of occupation and repair across centuries. Later centuries left the complex largely ruined but structurally distinct.
Saint Hilarion sits in Kyrenia District on the northern side of Cyprus, above the coastal town of Kyrenia/Girne, within the mountainous terrain that runs parallel to the island’s northern coast.
- Views: Perched high on the northern slopes of the Kyrenia mountain range, the castle offers panoramic views over the north coast and the Mediterranean Sea from its terraces.

From Kyrenia (Girne), Saint Hilarion is a 20-30 minute drive inland along the Kyrenia mountain road (B4). The castle is also visited on many north Cyprus small-group tours departing Kyrenia and Nicosia.
