Saint Agatha's Tower
Tower 17th-century coastal watchtower in Mellieħa, Malta
Perched above Mellieħa, Saint Agatha’s Tower (the Red Tower) dates to the 17th century; visitors climb for coastal views and to examine its thick defensive walls.
Saint Agatha’s Tower is a 17th-century coastal watchtower in the Mellieħa locality of northern Malta, completed in 1649. It is one of the larger and better-preserved examples of the Lascaris-era coastal defenses.
Sited on a rocky headland, the tower commands views over Mellieħa Bay and Għadira Bay and was built to observe and deter seaborne threats; its squat, square plan and thick limestone walls are characteristic of Maltese coastal towers. The tower interior is accessible when open to the public and offers panoramic views from the roof.
The Order of St John commissioned the tower under Grand Master Giovanni Paolo Lascaris in the mid 17th century as part of a chain of watchtowers around the island. It remained a military observation point through later periods and has undergone restoration work to preserve its structure and exterior finish.
The tower sits on a promontory in northern Malta within the Mellieħa area, overlooking popular beaches and coastal approaches to the northwest of the island’s main settlements.
- Local name: commonly called the Red Tower (Torri l-Aħmar) because of its distinctive red ochre exterior.
