Sacalin Island

Sacalin Island is an uninhabited island at the edge of the Danube Delta on Romania’s Black Sea coast. It is a sand-and-silt formation created and reshaped by river sediment deposition and coastal processes.

The island’s shifting beaches, dunes and mudflats provide habitat for coastal birds and pioneer vegetation; human presence is minimal and change to the island’s shape is ongoing. Access is typically by small boat and visitation is limited by its remote, dynamic nature.

The island emerged through natural deltaic processes as the Danube deposits sediment at its mouth and winds and currents reshape shorelines. Over the 20th and 21st centuries the area has been of interest for conservation and monitoring of delta dynamics.

Geographically Sacalin lies off Romania’s Tulcea coast within the broader Danube Delta and Black Sea interface, and it is associated with the network of channels and lagoons that characterize the deltaic shoreline.
