Museum Open-air museum showcasing traditional Polish wooden structures
The open‑air Rural Architecture Museum in Sanok preserves wooden churches, farmhouses and folk buildings from southeastern Poland; visitors walk period streets, view ethnographic exhibits and seasonal craft demonstrations.
The Rural Architecture Museum of Sanok (Muzeum Budownictwa Ludowego w Sanoku) is an open-air ethnographic museum in Sanok, Podkarpackie Voivodeship, Poland, established in 1958. It is one of Poland’s largest folk architecture museums, preserving traditional wooden buildings from the Carpathian region.
The site contains an extensive park of historic timber structures including rural cottages, farm buildings and several preserved wooden churches spanning mainly the 17th to 19th centuries. Exhibits include furnished interiors demonstrating peasant life, agricultural tools and regional artisanal objects with interpretive signage. The grounds cover roughly 38 hectares, allowing for long walking routes and scenic viewpoints over the valley.
The museum was founded in 1958 to save and display vernacular wooden architecture from the rapidly changing countryside. Buildings were relocated to the park and restored to create a representative cross section of local rural building types and community structures.
The museum sits on a hillside near the town of Sanok, close to the San River and the southern approaches to the Bieszczady foothills; Sanok town center is the nearest urban point of reference. The setting is rural and wooded, accessed by road from Sanok and nearby regional towns.
- Scale: The open-air collection occupies roughly 38 hectares and preserves over 150 historic wooden buildings from the Carpathian and Subcarpathian regions.
- Viewing tips: Best light for photography is late afternoon when timber textures and carved details are most visible; some church interiors have limited opening hours.
