Ruins of Jesús de Tavarangue

The Ruins of Jesús de Tavarangue are the remains of a Jesuit mission complex in Itapúa Department, Paraguay, notable for its large stone church and surviving masonry and listed as part of a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Surviving elements include the massive stone walls and the shell of the church building that demonstrate the ambitious scale of the mission’s construction; the site conveys the layout and monumental ambitions of 17th-18th century Jesuit reductions rather than intact domestic architecture.

The missions were established and built by Jesuit missionaries during the colonial era; construction and use reflect the Jesuit reduction system and ceased after the expulsion of the Jesuits from Spanish territories in the 18th century. The remains have been stabilised and interpreted as an archaeological and historical monument.

The ruins sit in eastern Paraguay’s Itapúa Department near the small settlement that gives the site its name and form part of a cluster of Jesuit mission sites in the region.
