Main image

Rozafa Castle is a hilltop fortress overlooking the city of Shkodër in northern Albania, known for its long occupation from antiquity through the medieval period. It is a prominent local landmark associated with the regional Rozafa legend.

The site features extensive ruined ramparts and towers set on a rocky promontory above the confluence of the Buna and Drin rivers. Paths around the walls give views across Lake Shkodër and the surrounding plain; the layout is compact and can be explored in under two hours.

The site has archaeological layers from antiquity through medieval and Ottoman periods and has been adapted and rebuilt multiple times. Local tradition and written records mention the castle in medieval sources; later repairs and fortifications date from Venetian and Ottoman activity in the region.

The fortress sits immediately east of the urban area of Shkodër on a rocky hill at the meeting point of the Buna and Drin rivers, overlooking Lake Shkodër and the surrounding agricultural plain.

  • Best viewpoint: Perched above the confluence of the Buna and Drin rivers, offering panoramic views over Shkodër city, the Buna estuary and Lake Shkodër - best light for photos is late afternoon.
