The Royal Palace of La Almudaina is the historic royal residence and official palace in Palma de Mallorca, situated beside Palma Cathedral on the bay. The palace occupies the site of an earlier Muslim fortress and was converted into a Christian royal residence following the 13th-century reconquest of Mallorca.
The palace’s ceremonial rooms, notably the throne room and formal reception spaces, plus a central courtyard and terraces facing the sea and the cathedral. The building shows a mix of medieval, Gothic and later interior elements and is still used for official ceremonies by the Spanish monarchy in the Balearic Islands.
The structure originated as a fortified alcazar under Islamic rule and was adapted after 1229 when King James I of Aragon incorporated Mallorca into his realm; subsequent centuries saw Gothic and Renaissance modifications as it became a royal residence. The palace’s role shifted over time from defensive fortress to ceremonial royal palace.
La Almudaina stands in Palma’s old town on the waterfront of the Bay of Palma, immediately adjacent to the cathedral and the Parc de la Mar, making it one of the central historic landmarks in the city of Palma de Mallorca.

From Palma Airport take the EMT airport bus A1 into the city to Plaça d’Espanya (Estació Intermodal); from Plaça d’Espanya / Estació Intermodal it’s an easy 10-15 minute walk into the cathedral/Almudaina area. The palace is adjacent to the Parc de la Mar and Avenida Antonio Maura in the city centre, so it’s also a short walk from most central Palma bus stops.
