Royal National Park
Park Oldest Australian national park with coastal heathland
Coastal cliffs, beaches and eucalyptus woodland lie an hour south of Sydney in Australia’s Royal National Park, popular for cliff-top walks, picnics, surfing and day hikes on marked trails.
Royal National Park is a protected coastal park in New South Wales, Australia, immediately south of Sydney and established in 1879. It preserves a mix of coastal cliffs, beaches, sandstone plateaus and eucalypt and rainforest gullies and is notable as one of the world’s oldest national parks.
The park offers a range of outdoor activities - coastal and bush walking, rock-platform access for tidepooling, picnic areas and beaches such as Wattamolla and Garie. Popular short walks and longer multi-day routes follow clifflines and valleys and provide ocean lookouts, waterfalls and native bushland.
Originally created for public recreation and conservation in the late 19th century, the park’s management has evolved to balance visitor use with coastal and native-vegetation protection. Infrastructure includes picnic areas, car parks and marked walking tracks.
Geographically the park sits on the coastal strip roughly 30 kilometres south of central Sydney, extending from southern suburbs down to the Illawarra escarpment and adjacent coastal towns.
- History and scale: Established in 1879, it is the world's second-oldest national park after Yellowstone and covers a coastal and hinterland area of sandstone plateaus, rainforest gullies and beaches.
- Safety and access: Some coastal attractions such as the Figure Eight Pools have seasonal or weather-related access rules; check park advisories before visiting for safety information.
What to See #
- Wattamolla: Wattamolla - a sheltered lagoon and picnic area with a small waterfall and beach popular for swimming and family visits.
- Figure Eight Pools: Figure Eight Pools - distinctive rock pools on the coastal platform that attract many visitors, with access subject to safety restrictions at high tides and after heavy rain.
- Garie Beach and coastal tracks: Garie Beach and coastal walking tracks - surf beach and links to longer coastal trails and cliff-top lookouts used for day and multi-day hikes.
How to Get to Royal National Park #
Royal National Park lies immediately south of Sydney. By car it is roughly 30-40 km from Sydney CBD: drive south on the Princes Highway (A1) to Sutherland and follow signage to the park entrances (Audley, Loftus, etc.). There are several park car parks and picnic areas with trailheads.
By public transport you can take Sydney Trains (T4/Cronulla Line) to Cronulla and then the passenger ferry across Port Hacking to Bundeena, which lands inside the park; alternatively take the train to Sutherland and connect with local buses that serve park entry points. From the ferry landing in Bundeena you are a short walk from many walking tracks.
Tips for Visiting Royal National Park #
- To avoid parking congestion and heat, visit popular spots (Wattamolla, Garie Beach) early in the morning or use public transport/ferry to Bundeena from Cronulla instead of driving.
- If you plan to visit the Figure Eight Pools, check tide and swell conditions and park signage before attempting the walk - the route is only safe at low tide with calm seas and is sometimes closed.
- For longer hikes (Coast Track, several‑hour loop trails) arrange transport at trailheads in advance and factor in limited services; many walkers start early to finish well before sunset.
Best Time to Visit Royal National Park #
Aim for spring or autumn for mild weather and smaller crowds; summer is warm but busiest.
