The Royal Museum for Central Africa, commonly known as the AfricaMuseum, is a museum in Tervuren near Brussels focused on Central African history, ethnography and natural history. Its roots date to Belgian colonial-era initiatives of the late 19th century.

Exhibitions cover ethnographic collections, natural science specimens and historical material relating to Central Africa, with galleries that address cultural, environmental and historical themes. The renovated museum combines historic displays with contemporary curation and research facilities.

Originally developed during the late 19th century under King Leopold II in connection with colonial exhibitions, the museum’s collections and building reflect Belgium’s historical ties to the Congo. The site underwent a comprehensive renovation and reopened in 2018 as the AfricaMuseum.

Set in the parkland of Tervuren east of Brussels, the museum is accessed from the Brussels metropolitan area and is sited within a landscaped colonial-era complex.

  • Reopening 2018: The institution was substantially refurbished and reopened to the public in 2018 under the name AfricaMuseum after a major modernization project.
