Mountain Prominent Vorarlberg peak with striking red rock face

The Rote Wand is a high peak in the Austrian Alps, located in Vorarlberg and forming part of the Lechquellengebirge. Its name means “Red Wall,” a reference to the mountain’s rock coloration in places.
Alpine hikers and mountaineers approach the summit via steep routes that require sure-footedness and alpine experience; the peak is valued for its panoramic mountain views. The mountain forms a conspicuous skyline feature in the region and is used as an objective by traverses within the Lechquellen range.
As with many alpine peaks in the eastern Alps, the Rote Wand was explored and regularly climbed during the 19th and 20th centuries as mountaineering developed, and established routes now link it with neighbouring summits.
The peak sits in western Austria’s Vorarlberg state within the Lechquellengebirge, surrounded by high alpine terrain and valley communities of the region.
