Ross River (Queensland)

Ross River is a river in northeastern Queensland that flows through the City of Townsville and discharges to the Coral Sea. It is a local focal point for water supply and riverside recreation.

Urban parks, walking and cycling paths, and boating and fishing opportunities are concentrated along the river as it passes through Townsville. Sections of the river corridor include picnic areas and riverside trails used by residents and visitors for short outdoor excursions.

The river has long been a geographic feature of the Townsville area and has been modified by engineering works to provide water storage and flood control for the city. The impoundment on the river creates a reservoir that supplies part of Townsville’s municipal water.

The river flows through the Townsville urban area in northeastern Queensland and reaches the sea on the coast near Cleveland Bay. The main reservoir on the river lies upstream of the city.
