An archipelago off the Caribbean coast of Colombia near Cartagena, the Rosario Islands form a group of small islands and cays that are part of a protected marine area. The islands are noted for their coral formations and shallow clear waters.

Snorkeling and diving over coral reefs, boat excursions between cays, and short-stay beach accommodation on the larger islands are the main attractions. Several islands have sandy beaches and shallow lagoons suitable for swimming and observation of reef life.

The islands are included in Colombia’s marine conservation system and are managed to protect coral and coastal ecosystems while supporting tourism activities. Over time the area has seen development of small tourist facilities and regulated visitor access to sensitive reef zones.

The archipelago lies in the Caribbean Sea off the coast of Boledvar Department, southwest of the city of Cartagena. Islands are scattered across shallow coastal waters and are accessed by boat from Cartagena and nearby coastal towns.

  • Access: Day trips and boat charters operate from Cartagena; many visitors combine a short boat transfer with snorkeling around coral gardens.
  • Visitor services: Some islands include small communities and accommodation, but services are limited compared with Cartagena, so bring essentials on short visits.

What to See #

  • Isla Grande: The largest inhabited island in the group, home to hotels, restaurants and the main piers used by day-trip boats.
  • Coral reefs: Shallow coral formations and patch reefs that fringe many islands and provide snorkeling and diving habitat for reef fish and sea turtles.
