Roman villa of Centcelles

The Roman villa of Centcelles is a late Roman site near Constantí in Catalonia, notable for a richly decorated dome dating to the 4th century AD. It is one of the best-preserved examples of a late Roman villa complex in the region.

The principal highlight is the dome mosaic, a large figurative mosaic covering the interior of a small dome that attracts scholars and visitors interested in late antique and early Christian art. The surviving villa plan shows domestic rooms and service areas that illustrate the scale of the estate.

The complex was constructed in the late Roman period and interpreted as a wealthy country residence or a funerary/representative building associated with elite owners of the Tarraconense province. Excavations in the 20th century exposed the mosaic and structural remains; the site has since been conserved and presented to the public.

Centcelles sits within the municipality of Constantí, in the province of Tarragona on the Catalan coast, a short drive inland from the city of Tarragona. The landscape around the site is agricultural and suburban, reflecting its position on the outskirts of the modern town.
